Attended University of Washington; trained and swam unofficially with men’s team (no women’s
team offered)

Swam with club team and the UW intramural women’s group that competed at AIAW (equivalent of
NCAA) nationals one year

In 1971, set American record at national AAU indoor championships and won two golds medals at
Pan America games

Won 3 titles at Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Nationals

Set 3 meet records in Women’s National Intercollegiate swimming and diving championships in
1972

Named 1971 co-winner of Seattle P-I Man of the Year Award (with brother Rick)

Made 1972 US Olympic team and chosen as co-captain;
won silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly

Continued competitive swimming, winning numerous

Won 2 Gold medals at the 1971 Pan American Games
and 3 Gold Medals at the 1970 World Student Games
