High School • Starred as a right-handed pitcher, catcher, first baseman, outfielder, and left-handed hitter • Two-time first-team All-City pitcher • Led team to four city championships Professional • Played two years of semi-professional baseball with Yakima Indians, and later Seattle Rainiers • Named Minor League Player of the Year in 1938 • Pitched 10 years for the Detroit Tigers • Selected to 1951 American League All-Star Team • Managed the Detroit Tigers, Seattle Rainiers, St Louis Cardinals, and Cincinnati Reds for 14 seasons Other • Selected to Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and jersey (#1)      retired by Reds in 1965 • Inspired Hutch Award - one of Major League Baseball's top three humanitarian awards • Seattle’s Cancer Research Center named in his honor • Named Seattle's Athlete for the Century in 2000 by Seattle P.I.
